Brief: To bring the essence of Mumbai in a very fresh, young and exciting way for Bombay Cartel, Fort {restaurant). Spaces to design: 1. Outside Wall. 2. Entrance room (Selfie area) 3. Main Wall in restaurant. Logo provided.
My Solution and design approach:
Since I were given full freedom, and bring in freshness, I decided to break the design styles into 3 drastic styles, for 3 areas.
1.Outside Wall: Since located in streets and gullies of Fort area in Mumbai, thought of going for a spray painted graffiti street style with restaurants main color that is the bold orange. Added essence of Mumbai through flamingos, Gateway of lndia, and gave a creative twist to their mascot 'a graphical lion' to redesigned Lion (Chimpanzee+ lion with chai). Used Vibrant colors to set an exciting tone to what lies ahead in the restaurant.
2. Entrance Room: Since the client wanted it to be an instagrammable spot, and wanted the small room look huge, I thought of giving it a break from the overwhelming vibrant colors to black and white perspective room acting as a portal that’s larger than it seems to the interior. Added mirrors on the left for illusion of more space, and keeping visitors engaged as to what’s inside.
3. Inside Main Wall: Decided to stick with it being ode to Mumbai, I came up with a layered Mix media approach for the wall (just like Mumbai with mixed culture) with prints collage, and paints. The composition includes marine drives' iconic rocks, Mumbai's art deco architecture, hint of Taj and touch of Mumbai's lifeline, the railway tracks. And trying to make it look different from the already exhausted designs on Mumbai in the market. Also added black and white lines and a lady painted in old Hindi Movie style posters for not so over powering bollywood touch.
